2 Talking About Places

UNIT 4-6 Asking for Locations

Let me explain about the signs used in the vocabulary lists.
  (お)teあlaい FORMAL(お+:POLITE/FEMININE)

* The sign "(お)" shows that the prefix 「お」 is sometimes added.
* The sign "お+" shows that「お」 is added at the beginning of the word.
* The sign "FORMAL(お+:POLITE/FEMININE)" shows that the 「お」 added word
can be used by everybody regardless of the speaker's sex in FORMAL situations.
* When the sign is given as (お+:FEMININE), it means that men should not use
the 「お」 added word because it sounds too feminine
. It also suggests that women
should use or it is better for women to use the 「お」added word.

Listen and repeat the following examples.
water               (お)mizu      (お+:POLITE/FEMININE) men & women
fish               (お)saかna    (お+:FEMININE)             menwomen
box lunch        (お)bentoo     (お+:FEMININE)               menwomen

Please note that the accent of words frequently changes when a prefix is added.
