2 Talking About Places

UNIT 6-1 BCP:The Bottom Changing Pattern

(NOUNは) NOUNです

In the Japanese language, male from female or singular from plural are not distinguished, so the basic NOUN sentence pattern is very simple. During conversations, only the 「です」 part changes.
Since Japanese is originally written vertically from top to bottom, the end changing pattern is called the “bottom changing pattern:BCP” in the MISJ programs.

BCP of 「です」

PRESENT/FUTURE
QUESTION      (?) ですか?
AFFIRMATIVE (○) です
NEGATIVE      (×) ではありません

In Japanese, the same BCP is used for both present and future tense. VERB and ADJECTIVE sentences have their own bottom changing patterns, which will be introduced in later lessons.

This concludes the main study of   LESSON 2. Using Everyday Checking List, you can review the important things you have learned in this lesson; however, be sure to master letters and pronunciation of [sa] line syllables first.
